# Connect Futurecast to ChatGPT

Use ChatGPT to turn a conversation about your life into boards and futures. A **board** groups related futures. A **future** is a short statement you can return to during practice.

You can talk through a goal, review the words ChatGPT suggests, and ask it to save the ones you want in Futurecast.

## Before you start

Have Futurecast open on your iPhone. Use ChatGPT in a web browser on your computer for these steps. OpenAI currently describes custom MCP connections as web-only. [OpenAI's custom app help](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461).

ChatGPT calls this a **custom app**. Older instructions call it a **custom connector**. It connects ChatGPT to Futurecast's tools. **MCP** is the standard the two services use to talk to each other.

**Developer mode** is the ChatGPT setting that lets you add your own app connections. You do not need to write code for the steps below.

Check your ChatGPT account before starting:

- **Business:** Ask a workspace owner or admin to add the connection if you cannot create apps.
- **Enterprise or Edu:** Your workspace must allow custom apps. An admin can give selected people permission to create them.
- **Plus or Pro:** OpenAI's guides disagree about which custom app actions are available. Its developer guide lists both plans for read and write access. Its Help Center limits full write access to workspace plans. Check the controls in your account. We cannot promise that your personal plan can create futures through this connection.
- **Free or Go:** The developer guide does not list these plans for this setup.

## 1. Add the connection in ChatGPT

OpenAI currently documents two layouts. Follow the one you see.

### If you see Security and login

1. Open ChatGPT **Settings**.
2. Open **Security and login**.
3. Turn on **Developer mode**. Read the message before continuing.
4. Open [ChatGPT Plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins).
5. Click the **+** button to add a custom connection.
6. Name it **Futurecast**.
7. If a description is requested, enter **Read and manage my Futurecast boards and futures**.
8. Under **Connection**, choose the public server option. Enter the address below.

### If you see Apps and Advanced Settings

1. Open **Settings > Apps > Advanced Settings** and enable **Developer mode**, if available.
2. Open **Apps > Create**. Workspace admins can use **Workspace settings > Apps > Create**.
3. Enter **Futurecast** as the name and use the address below.

Your workspace admin must make the app available before members can connect. Creating a private draft does not do that. [OpenAI's custom app help](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461).

### If your workspace admin already added Futurecast

1. Open **Settings > Apps** in ChatGPT.
2. Find **Futurecast** in the apps your workspace makes available to you. If your workspace provides it through **Plugins**, open that entry instead.
3. Open the app and select **Connect** when shown.
4. Continue with [approval in Futurecast](https://futurecastapp.com/help/agents-chatgpt#2-approve-it-in-futurecast) below.

If Futurecast is absent or says **Disabled by admin**, ask the workspace admin to make it available to you. Each person approves their own Futurecast connection. ### Enter the Futurecast address

Copy this whole address into the MCP server URL field:

For authentication, choose **OAuth**. This means you approve access through Futurecast. You do not give ChatGPT your Futurecast password.

If ChatGPT asks how to register the connection, choose **Dynamic Client Registration**, also called **DCR**. This lets the services register the connection for you. Leave optional **Client ID** and **Client secret** fields blank. Futurecast uses this registration method. Continue to connect or scan the tools. A tool is an action ChatGPT can ask Futurecast to perform. If you see **Scan Tools**, click it. The Futurecast approval page should open.

## 2. Approve it in Futurecast

Keep the browser page open. It shows a pairing code. That code links this request to your Futurecast library.

1. On your iPhone, open Futurecast.
2. Tap **Today** and open your profile.
3. Tap **Connected Agents > Pair an Agent**.
4. Enter the browser's code and tap **Continue**.
5. Check the connection name.
6. Choose the permissions you want.
7. Tap **Approve**.
8. When Futurecast says **Connected**, return to your browser.
9. Let ChatGPT finish checking the tools. If it shows **Create**, click it to finish.

For a text-only workflow, allow **Read** and **Write** when offered. Write also allows changes and deletions. Leave **Visions** off unless you want image generation. Visions is your image allowance, and generating images spends it. Read [the full permission guide](https://futurecastapp.com/help/account-connected-agents#understand-the-permissions).

If only Read is offered, the connection cannot save boards or futures. You can still draft words in ChatGPT and [add them in Futurecast](https://futurecastapp.com/help/create-future).

## 3. Check the connection

Use a normal chat. Do not switch to **Agent mode** or **Deep research** for these steps. OpenAI says Agent mode cannot use custom apps, and Deep research cannot use their write actions. Developer mode and Agent mode are different features. [OpenAI's custom app FAQ](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/12584461).

1. Start a new ChatGPT conversation.
2. Open the **+** or tools menu.
3. Choose **Developer mode**, if shown, and select **Futurecast**.
4. Send this request:

> Use Futurecast to list the names of my boards. Do not create or change anything.

The names should match the boards you have made available to assistants. An empty library can correctly return no boards. If expected boards are missing, keep Futurecast open and online. Check whether they are [hidden from agents](https://futurecastapp.com/help/account-connected-agents#hide-a-board).

Select Futurecast again when a later message needs to read or change your library. Review any approval ChatGPT shows. Its approval settings are separate from the permissions you granted inside Futurecast. [Using apps in ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/11487775-apps-in-chatgpt).

## 4. Turn your notes into a daily practice

You can use a connected app in a ChatGPT project chat. A project keeps related chats, files, and instructions together. Open your personal development project and select Futurecast from the tools menu. ChatGPT can ask before using an app to look outside the project. Give ChatGPT the context you want it to use. Paste a short summary or point it to the relevant notes in that project. Do not assume it has read every past conversation.

For example:

> I keep putting off a project because I worry it will not be good enough. Use the notes I have shared here to suggest one Futurecast board and five short futures. Write each future in the first person and present tense. Show me the exact words first. Do not save anything yet.

Read the draft. Ask for changes until it sounds like you. Then send:

> Use Futurecast to create this board and save these five futures exactly as approved. Do not generate images or change my other boards. Tell me when the changes have reached the app, or if they are still waiting.

Open Futurecast and stay online while the work finishes. Check the new board and its words. Then [practice the board or choose it for your Daily Ritual](https://futurecastapp.com/help/practice-daily-ritual). Creating a board gives you practice material. You choose when and how to use it.

If Futurecast is unavailable inside that project, copy the approved words into a new chat where you can select Futurecast. This also works when your notes live in a different account or workspace.

## If something gets stuck

| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| No Developer mode or Create option | Check your account and workspace permission. Use the matching setup path above. |
| A required client secret, or only a CIMD registration option | Recheck that you chose OAuth with DCR. If DCR is unavailable, contact support. Do not invent credentials or use your password. |
| Connection or tool scan fails | Check the full server address, including `/mcp`. Finish the browser approval. If it still fails, contact support with the message shown. |
| ChatGPT writes a draft but nothing appears in Futurecast | Check that Futurecast was selected and that Write access is allowed. Ask ChatGPT whether it sent the request or only drafted text. |
| The action is waiting | Keep Futurecast open and online. Ask for the status of the existing request before sending it again. |
| The connection worked before but now asks to reconnect | Complete a fresh approval when prompted. Do not paste access credentials into the conversation. |
