# Practice on the Futurecast website

You can read and play boards on the Futurecast website. A board groups short statements around a topic. In Futurecast, these statements are called **futures**.

<a id="choose-a-board"></a>

## Choose a board

1. Open the [board collection](https://futurecastapp.com/affirmations).
2. Choose a topic.
3. Tap **Play the daily cut** when it is available.

The **daily cut** is a shorter selection from that page. It gives you a starting point without choosing each future yourself.

The player opens on the first future, paused. Tap **Play** when you are ready. If the page does not offer playback, you can still read its futures.

## Choose more or fewer futures

Some boards contain chapters. A **chapter** is a smaller group within a board.

- Tap **Play all** to open the whole board in the player. The button shows how many futures it includes.
- Go to a chapter and tap **Practice this chapter** to open that section in the player.
- Use the chapter links to jump to a section of the page.

The player opens paused from every button. Nothing plays until you tap **Play**.

## Pick your own futures

On a page with **Pick your own**:

1. Tap **Pick your own**.
2. Tap each future you want to include.
3. Tap a selected future again to leave it out.
4. Tap **Play your cut**.

Your **cut** means your chosen set of futures. They play in the order shown on the page.

Use **Add all** to select a whole section. **Clear** removes all selections. **Cancel** leaves selection mode without starting a practice.

<a id="open-one-future"></a>

## Open one future

Tap a future in the page's list while you are outside selection mode. It opens in the player, paused. Tap **Play** when you are ready.

Playback continues within that future's daily selection or chapter.

<a id="control-playback"></a>

## Control playback

If the buttons disappear, tap the player or move your pointer to show them again.

- Tap **Pause** to stop at your current place. Tap **Play** to continue.
- Use the previous and next arrows to move between futures.
- On a phone, swipe up for the next future. Swipe down to go back.
- Tap the close button to end the practice. If a recap appears, tap its close button to return to the page.

<a id="change-the-voice-and-timing"></a>

## Change the voice and timing

When a board offers both voices, tap **Her** or **His** to switch. A board with one voice does not offer a switch.

To change how the practice plays:

1. Open **Practice settings** in the player.
2. Choose the setting you want to change.
3. Close settings to return to the player.

| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reps | How many times each future is spoken. Use minus or plus to choose from 1 to 10. |
| Reflect | A quiet pause between repetitions and before moving to the next future. Choose a time, or turn it off. |
| Repeat | Choose **Off**, **This future**, or **Whole board**. Off lets the practice end with a recap. |
| Sound | Background audio under the voice. Choose a sound, or **No sound. Just the voice.** |

**Reps** repeats the words before moving on. **Repeat** keeps returning to a future or the whole selection.

<a id="use-a-keyboard"></a>

## Use a keyboard

| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Space | Pause or continue playback when a button or link is not selected |
| Left or right arrow | Previous or next future |
| V | Switch voices, when both are available |
| S | Open or close practice settings |
| ? | Show keyboard shortcuts |
| Escape | Close an open settings panel, or leave the player |

<a id="finish-a-practice"></a>

## Finish a practice

With **Repeat** set to **Off**, the practice ends with a recap. A recap can also appear when you end early after playing a future.

Choose **Play it again** to restart. If a wallpaper is offered, you can save it from that screen. Tap the recap's close button to return to the page.

<a id="practice-from-a-guide"></a>

## Practice from a guide

The [seven types of rest guide](https://futurecastapp.com/guides/seven-types-of-rest) also has practice controls.

Tap **Begin the practice** to open its full set in the player. You can also choose a rest section and open its practice there. The player uses the same controls described above.

<a id="use-futurecast-on-your-iphone"></a>

## Use Futurecast on your iPhone

Tap **Get the app** to open Futurecast's App Store page. This installs or opens the app through the App Store. It does not save your website selection as a board in the app.

<a id="if-you-cannot-hear-anything"></a>

## If you cannot hear anything

1. Check that the player is playing rather than paused.
2. Turn up your device's media volume.
3. Check whether sound is going to headphones or another device.
4. Bring the browser back to the screen and tap **Play**.
5. Check your internet connection if audio has not loaded.

A reflection pause is meant to be quiet. Some futures may also have no voice audio. Choosing a background sound does not add a voice to those futures.
