What are test taking affirmations?

Test taking affirmations are short first-person statements you say before an exam to walk in clear-headed and sure of what you know. Say them out loud the morning of the test and again on the way in, so the thought you carry into the room is about your preparation. They claim skill, never a grade. In Futurecast each line is a future you practice daily.

How to practice this board

Say these the morning of the exam, once through and out loud, then play them again on the way there: on the bus, on the walk across campus, in the parking lot before a licensing exam. The last thing you hear before you sit down should be your own claim about what you know. They work best after a few weeks of daily reps, so start the week you start studying, not the night before.

In Futurecast, this board becomes a ritual of twenty-two futures, read aloud in her voice or his over ambient sound. When one starts to sound like your own thought, record it in your own voice and play it on the walk in.

What test taking affirmations do, and what they don't

A sentence will not put an answer in your head that you never studied, and none of these promise a grade or a pass. What they change is the voice you walk in with. A lot of exam dread comes from rehearsing the worst version ahead of time: the blank, the clock, the result. Saying a different version out loud every day gives you a second one to reach for when the paper or screen opens, and repetition makes it the one you reach for first.

Nerves can still come with you, and that is normal. The full board of affirmations for students has a chapter for test anxiety and the blank moment. If test panic is bigger than a practice, campus counseling or a doctor can help, and asking is a strong move.

Why these twenty-two

The set strikes three claims again and again, in different words. You are a great test taker. You know this material. Your head stays clear from the first question to the last. Only three affirmations name the test or the exam. The rest work for any test: a midterm, a final, the SAT or a licensing exam. Three are plain on purpose: read each question carefully, pace yourself, check your work.

Make it stick

Pick one future and make it your lock screen while you study. Say the full set every morning until exam day. On the day, say that one future when you sit down, and again each time you start a new section.
